Equine Work Experience
Riding experience I have been taken one private and group riding lesson weekly over the last ten months at Sun Valley Riding School. I have also commenced a course on riding with your seat in March 2012, with the South African Lipizzaners. The South African Lipizzaners is the only recognised school of performing Lipizzaner stallions in the world to be approved by the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. I have also commenced excising a private owner’s horse. In this particular instance, the horse was injured and is now coming back into work. My responsibility was initially to trot him for a certain length of time. After a certain period, the work changed to trotting and cantering. We are now at the stage where we will start jumping with him. He is also required to walk on a sand arena in order to desensitise his feet. This owner also has another pony which has been injured. I will commence riding her in the next two months. The work will initially involve walking, gradually building up her strength. At the heart of my training is the inherent belief that a quiet and gentle focused domination of the horse or pony is what is required. Over the last ten months, I have ridden over 30 horses or ponies. Horse Care I have completed a Stable Yard Management Course with the Beaulieu Equestrian Academy in Johannesburg at the beginning of 2012. This course focussed on the following: • Basic Instincts and Behaviour of the Horse, • Physiology, Psychology and the Horse’s Foot, • Tack, Blankets and Boots, • Grooming and Basic Care, • Stable Yard Management. I also read extensively on training techniques and well as good horse care. Competitive Experience I have assisted my daughter in competing in numerous events. This has involved preparation in terms of the following: • Tack preparation ensuring that the correct tack is being used for the various disciplines as well as that the tack is appropriately safety checked and cleaned. • Washing and plaiting the pony accordingly. I have also performed community service in the role of a jump judge. This involved being appropriately positioned at a jump on a cross country course and marking the riders for clear jumps, refusals and elimination if appropriate.
